Biography

Robert Houchins was born on 19 November 1810 in Louisa, Virginia. He and Living were married before 1837. He and Elizabeth Ferrell were married about 1844 in Rockingham, Virginia. He died on 4 May 1899 at age 88 in Stokes Township, Logan, Ohio.
BIOGRAPHY: The book "History of the Houchin Family of the United States" contains information about Robert Houchins and Elizabeth Ferrell on page 165 and 166. It states: "The Houchins of Logan county, Ohio are of the family of Robert Houchins who came into that county prior to 1860. It is not yet determined whether he is the same Robert as was living in Rockingham county, Virginia at an earlier date.
Robert of Rockingham was born in 1810, and first appears in records of that county in 1832. In 1846, he purchased of [unreadable] Hunton land on draft of Smith's Creek known by the name of Athens. This Robert was probably married more than perhaps three times. October 18, 1852 he married Elizabeth Ferrel, dau. of George Ferrel of Rockingham county. Children were Jouett, born 1837; Harvey born 1839; William, born 1842; Fabias born 1845; Philip born 1847; Daniel born 1849; Perry born 1849; Erasmus born 1850.
Probable brothers and sister of Robert (living in same household) were Edward, born 1820; Thomas, born 1825; Mary, born 1827. Living nearby were Riley and Wilson, born 1815. [Unreadable] married Susan (?) and their first son was John, born 1849. [Unreadable] married Elizabeth Wean, May 8, 1849 in Rockingham county. Edward married Maria Jane (?) and one child was Dewitt.
...Robert Houchins of Logan county, Ohio, was born in 1810. Children were Albert, born 1840; William, born 1841; James, born 1844; Silas, born 1846; George, born 1848; Erasmus, born 1849; Elisha, born 1852; Elizabeth, born 1853; Jenny, born 1855; a daughter, 1857; Elvira, born 1859."
Robert gave a deposition in the settlement of the estate of his brother James (file drawer H-5 in Probate Court, Logan County, Ohio). It reads: "State of Ohio, Logan County S. S. Robert Houchins being first duly sworn, says that he was born in Louisa County, Virginia on the 19th day of November 1810. That his father's name was John Houchins and his mother's name was Mary Houchins (nee) Cosby. Affiant further says that he had six brothers and two sisters named respectively William, James, Wilson, Abner, Edward, Thomas, Lucinda, and Mary. The said Lucinda Houchins and Abner Houchins left Louisa County Va in childhood about the year 1828 and moved to Augusta County Va and some time after that emigrated to the western States. Lucinda afterward married a man by the name of Shane whose Christian name I do not remember. The said James Houchins died without issue in the month of Febry 1874 or 1875 and Eli Van Horn Sr. was appointed Administrator of his Estate by the Probate Court of Logan County, Ohio. And that the interest the said Abner Houchins and Lucinda Shane in said Estate was not paid to them or their heirs for the reason that proof of their claim then to or their identity as relations and heirs was not satisfactory. And that said money is now held by the Treasurer of Logan County, Ohio.
Waiting such legal proof as will warrant its disbursement Affiant further says that neither of his sisters so far as he knows ever married a man by the name of Dushane but that the said Shane whom the affiant is informed is now dead was the husband of the said sister Lucinda Houchins.
[Signed] Robert Houchins, X his mark.
Sworn to and subscribed before me a Notary Public This 18th day of November 1895. Isaac N. Zearing Notary Public in and for Logan County, Ohio. Silas W. Houchins, witness."
In a book entitled "Historical Review of Logan County" by Robert Kennedy, 1903, it states on page 95 in a section on Stokes Township "Robert Houchins was for very many years an active and most influential citizen."

In another book entitled "The Biographical Record" is a biography of Robert's son-in-law Reverend Francis M. Taylor starting on page 344. It says of Robert "Mrs. Taylor's father became the owner of several hundred acres in the county. In his family were nine children". It goes on to detail Robert's nine children starting with James B.
One Logan county Ohio article states that Robert had settled in Logan county by 1849. Family stories are that he came to Logan county to help build the Lewis Reservoir and was granted nearby acreage for farmland in return. He most likely moved his family to Ohio in late 1852. In 1855, he and Elizabeth ceded land to the Logan county school district for the building of a school.

Biography

Edward Howchens was born about 1658 in England. He and Rebecca were married before 1686 in New Kent, Virginia. He died in New Kent, Virginia.
The book "History of the Houchin Family in the United States" by Dr. Paul C. Houchen states this about Edward: "Edward Howchens is the first of the name found in Virginia records, and it is from him that most of the Houchins in the country are descended. It is not known when he came to America, but in 1686 he was living in New Kent county, Virginia, a parishioner of St. Peters Parish." It continues, "The original register of St. Peters Parish is in the Virginia Theological Seminary at Alexandria, Va., and contains the names of Edward Howchens and his wife, Rebecca. The records of New Kent county were burned in 1866 and with their loss was also lost all further record of Edward Howchens and family."
